True Grit Remake

For some god forsaken reason, a remake of the John Wayne classic “True Grit” is being remade. Normally I would be cursing at my computer screen and feeling that Hollywood has lost any originality it ever had, then I read that the Coen Brothers (No Country For Old Men) are directing the remake. As I was pondering on who would fill the shoes of the Oscar winning role made famous by the Duke himself, it reads that Jeff Bridges (Iron Man) has been cast as Rooster Cogburn. I still am completely against most remakes, but this may fall under the 1% area. This will be the first Western from the Coen Brothers, and the first film since “The Big Lebowski” that they collaborated with Jeff Bridges. The original 1969 film is about an aging US Marshall named Rooster Cogburn, who is hired by a young girl to hunt down and kill the men that murdered her father. The point of view in “True Grit” was through Cogburn, but this version will be through the eyes of the young girl. The Coen Brothers are masterful storytellers and Bridges is an exceptional actor that can tackle any role. Without a doubt I am convinced this will be a remarkable remake of a remarkable film. Who knows, lightning may strike twice and earn Bridges his first Oscar for the role.
